Toronto School for Strings and Piano Payment and Attendance Policy. Detailed version

Payments

Lessons are to be paid in advance. Ongoing lessons must be paid for in full by cash, credit card, cheque, or eTransfer. You may also use our monthly payment plan by credit card or eTransfer. If you pay by eTransfer please mark the payment date on a calendar. If you want a monthly statement please inform the Principal.

Late payments will be subject to an administrative fee.

N.S.F. cheques and declined credit cards will be subject to a $15.00 administrative charge. Our MindBody software is set up to remind you of the expiry date of your card, but if you cancel or change your card, you must be in touch with us.

Keep us on your special list of people to contact if your credit card information changes. It is reasonably expected that you will respond to communications regarding failed payments or requests to update your payment information.

INTERAC email Payments:

Students who pay by Interac eTransfer must pay for their lessons in a timely way upon receipt of the invoice. We typically invoice first, and then payment is made of the invoice.

If you are set up for EFT (paying directly from your bank account by VOID cheque) you are responsible for keeping sufficient funds in your bank account. We recommend that you have overdraft protection. If you want to pay us by a different method, let us know before the 12th of the month as auto-pays take place on the 15th of the month.

From the months of September through June, lessons are scheduled weekly with time-off for the Christmas Break and March Break, as well as statutory holidays, such as Thanksgiving, Family Day, etc.

If you are on a payment plan that is based on weekly lessons and then you start to take more frequent lessons, this may affect the monthly payment plan in order to keep the lessons and payments in balance. Please inform the Principal directly.

Please let the office know if you change the frequency of lessons from weekly to more than once a week.

Absences

We cannot offer unlimited make-up lessons.

Please try your best to not miss lessons, do not miss unless it is absolutely necessary. Always let your teacher know as far ahead as possible to make alternate arrangements. If a lesson is cancelled due to the teacher being absent, it is not charged. That lesson will be rescheduled, or an equivalent amount of extra time will be added to a lesson.

  • Make-up lessons need to be taken before the end of the school year, after this, they will expire. Please try to schedule the make-up if possible within the monthly time-frame.
  • Refunds will not be given for make-up lessons not taken before the end of June.

If you plan to observe religious holidays, please reschedule the lessons in advance with your teacher to be taken at a mutually convenient time. Absences due to religious observance will not be charged when cancelled in advance, however, you will fall behind if you don’t schedule an alternate lesson time/date. No-shows for make-up lessons will be charged.

Lessons missed on Statutory Holidays are normally not charged. Please schedule an alternate lesson day/time in advance.

No-shows for lessons for when a student agrees to come on a Statutory Holiday will be charged.

Students who take lessons on Mondays are strongly encouraged to try not to miss their lesson every time there is a statutory holiday. It may be possible to come earlier in the day or on another day. Please note that there is Provincial Legislation in place which allows children to miss one half-day per week to receive music instruction.

Please contact your teacher directly if you are going to miss your lesson. A message left on the school voicemail may not get to the teacher in time. Do not ask someone else to tell the teacher! This applies especially in the case of families where there are several children taking lessons on the same day.

No refunds or discounts will be given for classes or rehearsals missed.

Communicating with the teacher

Not all teachers use text messaging or e-mail for communications. If you need to leave a voicemail, please do it as early as possible, and leave a range of reasonable dates and times in which you can come for a lesson.

When you or your child has a music lesson, it is noted in our system as ‘completed.’ You can check this online in our MindBody software as well as see a written record in the teacher’s attendance binder. You can view lessons taken, see your upcoming schedule, and even update your address/payment information. We encourage you to initial the lesson dates in the teacher’s binder at the lesson. If you don’t know whether you are set up for MindBody login, please be in touch with the office.

When you miss a regularly scheduled lesson, it will be recorded as an absence. Your teacher is a professional who has set aside this particular time for you or your child. He or she is paid for their time. Teachers are not paid a salary; they are paid by the lesson. In our system (MindBody Online), an unexcused absence is called a ‘late-cancel.’

Many music schools do not offer make-up lessons of any kind, however, we realize that occasionally due to illness, a school trip, or exams, you may have to miss a lesson. It is better to stay home if you are very sick.

Absences and Extended Absence

No-show absences will be charged. If you know in advance that you have to miss a lot of lessons, such as a holiday, please let the teacher know in advance. You can make alternative arrangements before or after the trip.

If you signed up for a full run of lessons (typically 34), you may ask your teacher for up to two make–up lessons and you will have up to two months from the date of the missed lesson in which to take this lesson. Lessons missed in May or June must be made up before June 30. It is the student’s responsibility to ask for a make-up lesson.

No-shows for the make-up lesson will be forfeited.

All lessons that are on the September invoice need to be taken before the end of June, including lessons scheduled in June. If you are planning to be away for an extended time please let your teacher know as soon as possible and make alternative arrangements. Lessons may be rescheduled, within reason, to a mutually agreeable time and date. Teachers may use their discretion to offer more than two make-ups, however, they are not obliged to do this.

Late-starters will not be pro-rated in terms of lesson fees. They can take lessons later into the year or summer.

Lessons that are taken every other week. (EOW)

If a student takes lessons every other week, the billing will be for a minimum of 2 lessons per month.

Automatic Priority Registration

As of June 2018, all students will be automatically pre-registered for the fall and will be asked a non-refundable deposit on their lessons, applied to the September invoice unless they inform the Principal that they are not continuing. The Priority Registration secures your lesson time in the fall schedule, and we will use the payment information on file to process the payment.

  • We will always make a concerted effort to make sure that all students and families are sufficiently informed about Priority Registration.

Stopping Lessons

If you wish to stop lessons, a full month’s notice is required, and this will need to be communicated directly with the Principal of the school. It is not enough to just tell the instructor or send an email.

Refunds after lessons have expired will not be given, except at the discretion of the School. Lessons sold normally have a one year period in which to be taken. There will be an administrative charge for early withdrawal from lessons.

Changing Teachers

We do not recommend changing teachers in the middle of the academic year. There will be a processing fee of $50.00 for changing from one teacher to another during the academic year unless the teacher requests the change.

If the teacher resigns from the school, that teacher is not permitted to teach their former students as the teacher has signed a clause that stipulates they may not teach or approach any of their former students for one year.

Frequently Asked Questions

FAQs

What is the history of your school?

The Toronto School for Strings and Piano was founded in 1999 by Julian and Mary Fisher to provide their students with a positive and stimulating learning experience. We have been in our present location for almost ten years and have recently expanded and renovated our facilities.

What programs do you offer?

We offer a wide variety of musical enrichment and education programs. Private lessons on violin, viola, cello and double bass are available, but we also offer other instruments such as piano, guitar, electric bass, flute and jazz programs.

We also teach theory for all grades.

Additionally, group enrichment programs are available, such as chamber music programs, orchestra programs and many performance opportunities at our recitals and salon concerts. We will also be offering summer programs.

What are the credentials of your teachers?

The Toronto School for Strings and Piano takes great pride in the quality of our teachers. Every teacher at our school has a minimum Bachelor of Music degree or equivalent. Many of our teachers are active performers in professional ensembles in Toronto and the GTA.

What is the Suzuki Method, and where can I get detailed information about it?

The Toronto School for Strings and Piano is a proud member of the Suzuki Association of Ontario, and the Suzuki Association of the Americas.

Do you teach the Suzuki Method?

Yes, we offer lessons using the Suzuki Method, as well as the Suzuki supplementary group classes. Julian Fisher, the principal of the Toronto School for Strings and Piano, is an active member of the board of the Suzuki Association of Ontario.

Where are you located?

Our main studio is located in the heart of downtown Toronto, Yonge St. Just north of St. Clair

Please click on Contact Us and you will find maps showing both our location and close, convenient and inexpensive parking. We are within a five-minute walk from the St. Clair subway station.

I am an adult who has never played before, or used to play and would like to re-start. Are lessons available for me?

Of course! We are more than happy to teach any student who has a love and desire to pick up an instrument. Often, adults have an easier time picking up an instrument because they are responsible for their own results and practice patterns.

I don’t have an instrument. Do you rent them?

We do not offer in-house instrument rentals. If you do not currently have an instrument, we recommend the following stores for instrument rentals:

Toronto Store for Strings

We do keep keep supplies such as strings, rosin, metronomes and music books on hand and are happy to order items in, as a convenience to teachers, parents and students.
Very handy for busy families who might find it tricky to get to the music stores.
Please call/email ahead of time.

Technology

Julian is happy to help you get set up with SmartMusic, the Amazing Slow-Downer or any software to help enhance your practicing and lesson experience.

How old do you have to be to start taking music lessons?

Every child is different and unique. If the child has expressed an interest and is able to hold their attention to be able to have a lesson and have reasonable practice time during the week, then there is no “minimum age” for music lessons.

How often are the lessons and when are they available? May I start at any time?

Lessons are usually taken once per week as a private, one-on-one lesson with one of our teachers. Lessons are possible every other week, but are not encouraged due to less consistency and slowing the rate of student progress.

The Toronto School for Strings and Piano is open seven days a week and have teachers during daytime and evening hours. Daytime lessons are encouraged as they are often less disruptive of student schedules and allow for family time in evenings.

New students are always welcome to begin anytime.

What if I cannot commit to a regular appointment?

For those who are unsure about their ability to commit to a specific time, FlexPlan lessons are available for a small premium. These lessons are purchased as a block and are taken by appointment with the teacher at a mutually-convenient time. Lessons canceled with less than 24 hours notice will be charged, and a minimum of one lesson must be used per month. FlexPlan lessons are valid for one school year (September to June). Summer FlexPlan lessons are also available.

How much do your lessons cost? What payment options do you have?

We have a wide range of teachers for every student need and budget. Please read the “Fees” page for more information.

Why do you have a registration fee?

We do our very best, to run our school with a minimum of overhead, to keep fees reasonable for students, and pay the teachers decently. The registration fee, though very modest, helps to offset the cost of providing high-quality service to our students. The presence of a registration fee helps people to recognize that there are administrative costs involved in providing music lessons.

What if I am away, I am/my child is sick with a cold, or there is a school trip?

The Toronto School for Strings and Piano adheres to the Ontario Registered Teachers Music Studio Policy. If students do not appear for their regularly scheduled lesson, then they are marked as absent. Make-ups can be arranged at the teacher’s discretion. Naturally, for extenuating circumstances, adjustments will be made.

If you have any questions about this policy, please call the school at (416) 968-0303 and speak to Julian Fisher for more information.

If I know I am going to be away, can I arrange a make-up time in advance?

Absolutely. This is highly encouraged, as it ensures that students do not fall behind in their progress.

Are there performance opportunities?

There are many performance opportunities with the Toronto School for Strings and Piano. Along with our semi-annual group performances, we have an annual solo recital. During the rest of the year, we have frequent, more intimate salon concerts that allow all students to perform in a low-pressure, more intimate setting. More performance opportunities are coming soon, as well.

Can I make a donation to the Toronto School for Strings and Piano that is dedicated towards a bursary or scholarship?

Yes. We have been doing this for quite some time already. We are currently making inquiries as to how this can become a tax-deductible donation. One hundred percent of your gift to the Toronto School for Strings and Piano is directed either to the fund or to an account of a student, as per your wishes. It can be made anonymously or named, as you wish. We will not circulate your information to others.

My question wasn’t answered here.
