Sheila Smyth

Sheila is a professionally-trained performer and teacher who is passionate about teaching and enjoys working with people of all ages and levels.

Sheila is, above all, an imaginative teacher, and because of her extensive professional training she has many creative strategies and ideas in her teaching toolbox.

Her teaching‑studio environment is friendly and nurturing, and her teaching style is catered to the individual needs of each student.

Sheila holds a Bachelor of Music in Performance degree from the University of Toronto and undertook further training in New York with Burton Kaplan.

Her Baroque studies included masterclasses and lessons with Marilyn McDonald, Robert Mealy, Mark Destrubé and Elizabeth Blumenstock, among others.

As a violinist and violist, Sheila has worked with many orchestras throughout Ontario, including Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony, Tafelmusik, Opera Atelier, Windsor Symphony, Aradia Ensemble, Talisker Players, and the Niagara Symphony.

She is principal violist of Opera York and Concordo Orchestra. She has performed in the backup orchestra for various pop artists, including Led Zeppelin, Smokey Robinson, and Natalie Cole and was part of the onstage band for the television show Canadian Idol.

Sheila also performs with the Cardinal Consort of Viols.
