Joyce Gundy

Joyce Gundy passed away peacefully at Toronto General Hospital on Sunday, March 9, 2025, at the age of 94.

A dedicated and passionate music educator, Joyce taught for many years at the Royal Conservatory of Music, the University Settlement, and the Toronto School for Strings and Piano.

She was honored by the Royal Conservatory with the prestigious Legacy Examiner Award in recognition of her years of dedicated service as a music examiner.

Thousands of students benefited from her thoughtful and encouraging adjudications, which reflected both her expertise and deep commitment to musical education.

As a violin and viola teacher, she nurtured countless students, some of whom went on to perform with the National Youth Orchestra of Canada and pursue professional careers in music. Her teaching made learning a joyful and meaningful experience for all who studied under her guidance.

Joyce was predeceased by her sister, Carolyn Gundy, and her father, Henry Pearson Gundy.

Special thanks are extended to the doctors and nurses at Toronto General and Toronto Western Hospital for their compassionate care during Joyce’s time of need.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to St. Matthew’s Bracondale House, where she lived with safety, comfort, and dignity, or to the Toronto Humane Society.

A celebration of Joyce’s life will be held at a later date. Those wishing to be notified may email info@torontoschoolforstrings.com for further details.
