Toronto School for StringsMusicianshipMaking Music with D.J. ClaryOne of the really different things about the TSS is that a good many students partake in the very motivating and enjoyable activity of Musicianship with D.J. For a long time, we have wanted to have students experience the joy of having regular piano/instrumental sessions. On a bi-weekly basis, the students play through their repertoire, learning how their part fits with the piano, and giving their rhythmic awareness a good workout. It is a good opportunity to review previously learned material, as well as to sight-read. It is a complete experience, as the composer intended. It is valuable to reach back into repertoire that may have been missed during the intense focus of exam preparation. Ear training is done regularly. There is no fear of procrastinating when it comes to preparation for the RCM Examination Ear Test. It feels like a game. Now the student can see why it is a good idea to work on this material. It isn't just for an exam – it relates to what you are playing. About D.J.I think too, that the act of sharing music-making with such a fine musician as D.J. has got to make a difference. Her polished musicianship tends to rub off on the student, and the informal nature of the lesson allows for much interchange to take place. Peer Reviews of Musicianship with D.J.One interesting remark from one of my violin students, Clara Syme that relates to this format of instruction. She played her newest piece, quite nicely, I thought, and said, "It was better last week with D.J." One of our "clients" is an alumnus of Mary; her name is Bethany Houghton. She makes a trip from Mississauga for this session She is now studying with Zdenek Konicek, a highly regarded cellist, formerly of the Prague and Czech Quartets. Mr. Konicek is a full professor at the University of Western Ontario. He has spoken highly of the value of taking this form of instruction, as a perfect compliment to the private lesson. If you are interested in having a musicianship session, speak to Mary, myself, or D.J. Clary. We would be happy to set up a time. |
